Diana Tacey & Susan Weidner visit girls schools and womens prisons in Afghanistan
Mesa Sunrise Rotary Club member Diana Tacey and humanitarian travel team member Susan Weidner traveled to Afghanistan in May-June of 2011 and visited several girls schools, orphanages and women's prisons in Kabul, Mazar-I-Sharif, Kunduz and Jalalabad.
In Jalalabad they were able to visit the Fatima Zehra school and conduct a computer workshop at the new Art & Computer Room built by John Langerak and the Ladies Cirlce of Holland, and facilitated a Rotary Matching Grant with Phoenix Camelback Rotary Club and Tempe Kyrene Corridor Rotary Club, which provided new computers, printers, desks, chairs, 948 textbooks on Dari, Pashto, Afghan history, mathematics, geography, science and Kandahari embroidery. Art supplies were also delivered on this trip and several art projects organized using charcoal, pastel chalk, oil paints and pastels.
Diana and Susan set up a new kindergarten room at the Balkh women's prison in Mazar-I-Sharif, after completion of a new remodel funded by a grant from INL International Narcotics and Law Enforement under the direction of CSSP Corrections System Support Program. Diana is Founder and Executive Director of ChildLight Foundation for Afghan Children and has made annual humanitarian trips to Afghanistan since 2002.
